Public-Use Computers
Computer Use at the Silver Falls Library
The Silver Falls Library provides two word processing only computers that do not require sign-ups, and are available on a first come first serve basis. In addition, computers providing Internet access and Microsoft applications are available to cardholders and visitors (those not eligible for a library card). Visitors must arrange computer use at the Reference Desk.
Due mainly to space limitations, only one person may be on a station at one time. Please see the Reference Desk librarian to request an exception to allow more than one person per station.
Usage Limits and Session Lengths
Computer use is limited to 2 sessions per day. A session is defined as a singular use of a computer, regardless of session length (full session or lesser length). Missed reservations count towards the daily usage limit. Maximum session lengths are as follows:
- YA ..............45 minutes
- Adult ..........45 minuts
- Express .....15 minutes
Each session may be extended in 15 minute increments, up to a maximum of 30 minutes of additional time, as long as no reservation is pending (excluding the Express Station).
Reservations
Reservations must be made in person at the Reservation Station. The following reservation options are available:
- Next available computer
- Reserve a computer for later in the day
Reservations are valid until 10 minutes past the reserved time, after which they are cancelled automatically. Missed reservations count toward the daily usage limit. Multiple concurrent reservations are not available.
Options for Use
"Walk-Up" Use for Unoccupied Computers
All computers display availability information. Availability and session length are subject to pending reservations. Please follow the on screen instructions and be prepared to provide your library card number.
Reservation Station
A self-service reservation station is available in the main computer area. Reservations are made on site for the day of use. Please follow the on screen instructions and be prepared to provide your library card number. You may want to write down your reservation information.
Obtaining Cards for Computer Access
The following cards provide access to Internet computers; only one card will be issued (i.e. an individual will not be issued both a Library Card and a Computer Use Only Card):
Library Cards
See How to Get a Card for more information.
Computer Guest Cards
Short-term visitors (those visiting the area for 30 days or less) will need a Computer Use Guest Card to access the Internet. A free Guest Card, good for one day only, may be obtained at the Reference Desk. Visitors should return the card to the Reference Desk after each use (2 sessions allowed each day).
Computer Use Only Cards
Long-term visitors (those visiting the area for longer than 30 days), may use the free Guest Card (see above) for the first month. After 30 days, long-term visitors may purchase a Computer Use Only Card, good for 2 months, for $5.00. See the Reference Desk for more details.
