Rules for Using the Building

Standards of Behavior in the Library

The Silver Falls Library has established certain standards of acceptable behavior on library property in order to maintain an atmosphere that promotes the use and enjoyment of the resources and services of the Library; promotes the safety of the general public and the library staff; and protects the building, furniture, equipment, and materials of the Library.

Any activity that interferes with the rights of others to use the library; disrupts the normal functioning of the Library; or could result in physical, emotional, or mental injury to oneself or others or in damage to the library facilities, equipment or materials is considered disruptive and unacceptable behavior.

The Library reserves the right to require anyone who engages in disruptive behavior to leave the premises, the right to restrict privileges for a specified period of time, and the right to ban the individual from the library for a specified period of time or permanently. In most cases, a staff member will notify the individual that he or she is in violation of the standards of conduct and will provide one verbal warning.  Persons required to leave the premises who fail to do so will become trespassers.  Unlawful activities will be reported immediately to the police.

Library users are expected to:

  • Keep conversation or audio equipment volume at a level which will not disturb others
  • Keep food out of the library
  • Bring beverages into the library only in closed containers
  • Refrain from use of tobacco products in the library
  • Keep wet clothing off all library furniture and equipment
  • Wear shoes in the library
  • Leave animals (other than service animals) outside the library, except as authorized by the Library Director
  • Keep bicycles out of the library
  • Refrain from soliciting or conducting commercial transactions in the library

Displaying weapons on Library property is permissible only for law enforcement officers.

An individual whose bodily hygiene is so offensive as to constitute a nuisance to other individuals shall be required to leave the building.  When the problem is corrected, the individual may re-enter the library.

The Library is not responsible for property left unattended.

Children from birth through five years of age must be accompanied throughout the library building by a responsible adult.  Children from six through nine years of age must have a responsible adult who remains in the library building during the visit.  Children abandoned at the library at closing time will be placed in the care of the Silverton Police Department for their safety and well-being.
